100k run

Farum Sø, Denmark · June 2020

A few years ago I got this weird idea that I wanted to run 100k.

A green tarp pitched at the edge of a wood by a lake, a table of supplies and camp chairs beneath it, a log fire-circle nearby, in a warm-toned photograph.
The support camp by the lake, where friends and family held the whole day together. Farum Sø, June 2020.

It seemed pretty stupid, as I had not been able to run comfortably more than 5-7k because of year-long injuries. But some ideas are just not that easy to let go of, and yesterday I actually made that idea come true: I clocked in 100k in 13 h 21 min!

I didn’t run for some greater purpose or cause. I just ran to run, and it felt pretty good. Sometimes it makes most sense to do things for no particular reason.

The 100k took me back to the PhD: running around (in circles), trying to get somewhere, for a very long time, getting really f****** tired. And when you cross the finish line you think ‘I will never do this again’, until a few hours later where you’re planning the next thing.
