My interest in human disease comes from her, a clinical geneticist. Her medicine reached one patient at a time, and I went looking for something that could scale. I found it in reading biology as data. Instead of reading biology from a textbook, I could write algorithms that learn it from the data, and run the experiment on a computer instead of at the bench.
Almost fifteen years ago I fell in love with the digitalization of human biology, genomes and cells, and with turning that data back into biology for new medicine. That is still the heart of what I do.
Now the big question is: what will we do with AI for new medicine?
